Rofis MR70 Dual LEDs (XHP70.2 & XP-G2) Review

Preface

Dual LEDs (for different types of beam profiles) always gets us excited, somewhat like having “thrower” & “flooder” all-in-one flashlight.

The MR70 is even capable of working as a powerbank with its included non-proprietary 26650 battery.

Packaging & First Impressions

This is what the light will come with as shown below.

  • The threads and o-rings were well lubricated. Threads were smooth and clean (no gritty feeling).
  • The side electronic switch requires a firm and deliberate press to activate and helps in preventing any unwanted activation of the light.
  • Anodizing of the light is uniform without any missing specs; with a light shine to it.
  • The provided lanyard is able to support the full weight of the light and should hold up to the test of time.
  • Holster provided is of decent quality and should withstand day-to-day abuse without issue.
  • Battery compartment holds the provided non-proprietary 26650 5500mAh battery with sufficient room for a slightly thicker battery width. Larger capacity/fatter 26650 batteries should be able to fit without issue as well.

UI (User Interface)

UI for this light is suitable for a Bug-Out Bag (BOB) or walking/hiking light as it is relatively straightforward to use.

Switching ON and OFF is done by the side electronic switch on the light, so no momentary activation is possible.

From OFF:

  • 1 Click  – Main LED will switch ON to last brightness level used (last mode memory).
  • 2 Click – Direct access to TURBO.; 2 Click again for SOS or 1 Click to switch OFF [Side/Tail Switch].
  • 3 Click – Direct access to STROBE; HOLD (~1 sec) for SOS or 1 Click to switch OFF.
  • HOLD (~1 sec) – Side LED will switch ON to last brightness level used (last mode memory).
  • HOLD (~3 sec till Side LED is OFF) – LOCATION mode is activated – red indicator light on side switch will start flashing; 1 Click – LOCATION mode is deactivated.
  • HOLD (till Side LED flashes 2 times) – LOCKOUT mode is enabled; HOLD (till Main LED switched on LOW mode) – LOCKOUT is disabled.

From ON (Main LED):

  • 1 Click – Light will switch OFF.

Form Factor

For flashlights that are intended to use for a BOB or walking/hiking usages and for possibly an extended period of time, form factor is extremely important.

This light feels extremely well balanced in a medium sized hand (not head/tail-heavy). Switching between overhand and underhand holding method is easy with its form factor. The knurling on the light and smooth curvature of the head (one piece head and body) enables the light to fit one’s hand almost perfectly and still be sufficiently “grippy”, even with wet hands/gloves.

The Side LED does not protrude from the flashlight body and the material (Polycarbonate?) used feels well-built.

It fitting in the holster snugly as well as being able to tail-stand perfectly (even with the lanyard attached) without the slightest wobble is very much desired.

Charging Process

With the provided Rofis nylon braided-style Micro-USB Cable, the battery was charging at ~1.9A which is relatively close to the stated 2.0A charging rate.

The light is capable of operating on the Side LED’s MID mode only, even when charging (at the expense of a slower charging rate).

The RED indicator depicts charging in progress and GREEN indicator depicts charging has completed.

Discharging – Power Bank Function

This is probably one of the key specialty of this flashlight – the ability to use it as a backup Power Bank with the provided Micro-USB to USB Cable Adapter.

The flashlight is said to be able to discharge at a max of 2.2A. However, we received mixed results when trying to charge an Apple iPhone 6S, Samsung S9+ and Apple iPad PRO 9.7in.

All of which had varying discharge amperes to the devices.

  • The Samsung S9+ which is capable of charging at ~1.5A (at its current battery capacity of 87%), was supplied with a charging rate of ~0.88A.
  • The Apple iPhone 6S had a charging rate of ~0.81A.
  • Interestingly, the Apple iPad PRO which is capable of charging at ~2.1A rate, refused to charge with the flashlight available discharge output. This is could be due to the flashlight being unable to provide a constant 5V output (Apple products have been known to be slightly fussier when it comes to charging requirements).

Note:

  • Battery Discharging Capacity Indicator – Side Switch Indicator Light will flash the following to indicate remaining battery capacity
    • 4 Green Flashes (>80% battery capacity)
    • 3 Green Flashes (50% – 80% battery capacity)
    • 2 Green Flashes (20% – 49% battery capacity)
    • 1 Green Flash (<20% battery capacity)
    • When battery capacity is <5%, discharging will stop

Beam Style/Beamshots

For the beam profile of the Main LED, the spill, corona and hotspot is somewhat predictable due to the fairly deep Orange Peel Reflector. Hence even with the larger sized LED used, the beam is still sufficiently “throwy” for recognising items in the near to mid-range distance. There is even a green GITD O-ring situated between the lens and reflector.

This light’s Side LED is covered by an opaque diffuser-style lens which provide a soft and artifact-free beam profile for up-close to near range distance usage.

The above beam profiles are a rough interpretation of what is seen when white wall hunting.

The Main LED has a fairly large hotspot with a ring of corona and a rather wide usable (almost circular) spill. It also helps that the XHP70.2 led is perfectly centred in this sample. There is a slight ring in the main beam when whitewall hunting but is not visible in real world usage.

The Side LED has a wide and even flood-type style with an almost 180 degree beam angle. There is no rings or beam artifacts when whitewall hunting.

All of the beamshots taken below are done so with the following camera settings ([For Main LED] LOW: 0.5, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB, MID: 1/4, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB, HIGH: 1/6, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB & TURBO: 1/10, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB) and ([For Side LED] LOW: 2, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB, MID & HIGH: 1/2, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB).
Some pictures have been adjusted slightly to depict as close as to what is seen in real life. The distance of the light from the door is 4.6m.

Mode (Output) Spacing

Mode spacing appears to be progressively brighter to the eye and the modes are well spaced enough to be able to know which mode one is currently in. With that in mind, TLR tend to view mode spacing as battery life indicators (amount of runtime left) rather than the specific output (lumens).

It would be nice if Rofis would incorporate a MOONLIGHT mode for those bedtime runs or during which having 3 diffused lumens (Side LED) is still a tad too bright for the night-adjusted eyes. This is truly nitpicking here – as for most cases the available modes and spacing are perfect for almost every activity. That said, being able to activate both Main and Side LEDs would make the Rofis the perfect walking/trekking flashlight (being able to light up both one’s footpath and the distance ahead).

Tint & CRI

Rofis did not disclose the tint (color temperature) and/or the CRI (Color Rendering Index) for the LEDs used in their light. For this light, a guesstimate would be in the 6000K and 70CRI ballpark for the Main LED & 4000K and 80CRI ballpark for the Side LED.

For the Main LED, there are tint shifts throughout the beam profile. The hotspot is cool white whilst the corona possess a slight yellow-green tint; and the spill having a slight purple tint. This is however, not as noticeable in real life.

For the Side LED, there is no tint shift in the beam profile and it has an even yellowish tint throughout.

Waterproofness

The light was subjected to warm water submersion, followed by cold water submersion and left under room temperature running water tap whilst running on TURBO (Main LED) & HIGH (Side LED) separately.

No signs of water intrusion in the head, switch or body was seen.

Lockout Capability

Both mechanical lockout and electronic lockout are possible when needed, like during transportation in a bag.

See above “UI (User Interface)“, on how to activate and deactivate electronic LOCKOUT.
When LOCKOUT mode is activated, any button presses will cause the red LED on the Side Switch button to flash once for ~0.5 sec.

A quarter turn (anti-clockwise) of the tailcap will enable mechanical LOCKOUT.

Note: If electronic LOCKOUT is enabled followed by enabling mechanical LOCKOUT, the electronic LOCKOUT will still remain enabled even after the mechanical LOCKOUT has been disabled.

Summary

To sum up, we believe that the most important part of any review is if given the chance to purchase the same light for our own EDC or to gift to our loved ones out from one’s pocket (wallet), would we still do it?
For this light, it is a definite YES if the tint shift is not an issue for your usage.

Rofis may have had created an almost perfect home run flashlight with excellent charging rate (amps), power bank capability, dual LEDs for up-close to mid-range distances and all at a rather wallet-friendly price point. Rofis is not the first manufacturer who thought of this style of dual LEDs setup but they certainly did an excellent job with an almost straightforward  UI interface (after the initial learning curve).

However, as mentioned earlier, we look forward to the day that Rofis is able to incorporate a way to enable activating both Main and Side LEDs at the same time –  that would make it THE perfect walking/trekking flashlight among other numerous uses.
