Preface
The NTP40 is the first titanium pencil from Nitecore.
Let’s check out the merits and demerits of this new Nitecore NTP40 model.
Note: This is our first pencil review. While we are no pencil aficionados, Nitecore was generous to send us one to checkout for this review.
Packaging & First Impressions
This is what the pencil will come with as shown below.
- The threads were lightly lubricated. Threads were smooth and clean (no gritty feeling).
- No o-ring was used for the threads.
- The provided clip is non-reversible and comes installed from the factory.
- The clip is held down firmly by 2 x T6 Torx screws.
- The clip has sufficient tension to ensure that the pencil will stay clipped to any material, to prevent the pencil from falling out.
- No eraser/eraser cap option is available.
- The lead sleeve is non-retractable.
- There are numerous grooves on the grip section to provide ample “grip” for most uses.
- The “crystallized” pattern cap is a functional upgrade to a plain finish cap as it gives a slightly better “grip” to aid removal for lead refills.
- This pencil uses the Schmidt DSM 2006 Feinminen-System 0.5mm mechanism.
- Scanning the QR code with your phone/tablet on the box’s back would bring up the Nitecore NTP40’s product page.

Form Factor
For pencils that are intended to use on a daily basis (EDC) and for possibly an extended period of time, form factor is extremely important.
The pencil feels rather well-balanced in a medium sized hand. There was minimal fatigue experienced for extended usage (~ 1 to 2 hours) except that it is noticeable heavier than the equivalent pencil made of plastic or aluminium due to the material used.
Refilling the leads is a relatively easy task. However, the lack of an eraser option might be a deal breaker for some.
The pencil streamline profile helps in making it EDC-friendly and the numerous grooves on the grip area provide sufficient “grip” even with gloves/wet (sweaty) hands.
The lead sleeve does not retract with the lead, which presents a possibility of getting poked by it if placed in a pocket (depending on the carry position). As such, extra care must be made to prevent direct drops on the lead sleeve as it will likely bend and affect the lead extending process.

Summary
To sum up, we believe that the most important part of any review is if given the chance to purchase the same pencil for our own EDC or to gift to our loved ones out from one’s pocket (wallet), would we still do it?
For this pencil, it is a probable YES – if the non-retractable lead sleeve is not an issue for your usage.
The streamline sleeve and clip, titanium body, fairly lightweight (for Titanium), usage of a non-proprietary (and easily replaceable) lead mechanism brand, 0.5mm lead refills and numerous grooves for the grip area are all plus points for this pencil.
As mentioned earlier, we look forward to the day that Nitecore uses a retractable lead sleeve instead.
As with all gears, two is one and one is none.
